Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHi, im new in taking care of zebra finch and i’m having a problem as of now…. >___
here is the story.When I first bought them they are so sweet and cuddly with each other,specially after they built their nest..but then the female died.And so we decided to buy 3 other finches..so there could be 2 pairs of them,we even bought new big cage for them, so I didnt think there would be a problem for territorial thingie…But when I put them all in the same cage my “widower” decided to chase everybody especially the male one. as of now I placed a divider in the cage so he’s all alone yet again on the other side… what am I supposed to do so he would get along with others? T___T I feel like he only wants the first one who passed away to be his mate… T___T
What you so is take the 2 hens and put them in the cage of the widower. Have it pick a new partner then take the remaining one to be with your other cock. An agressive zebra could mean that it wants to mate already and doesn’t want the distraction of the other male.
thanks!!! I have another question… although its kind of stupid for you guys who have experience already.. XDDD
`. If you decided to place the finches indoor… should you take them out in the morning for direct sunlight?? wont it bother them and have problem being familiar with their surrounding?
2. And is it okay at night to leave them without light? Or should I provide them one??
Thanks in advance~!!! Ü
oh btw I followed what you said. after numerous of chasing, he decided to be with the white one… which is from the day I bought it (3rd day as of now) its feathers are all stood up and I’m thinking its going to die sooner or later… T___T
He picked someone who’s going to die yet again. what the heck… but I think she’s a little bit ok now.. I gave her err… ‘Neozep’. its a local medicine for human. hahaha XDD I think its quite effective since her feathers are quite better compared yesterday.. XDDDD
hi eniehs,
if you can, provide them a cage which will 1) have a little sunlight during the day(usually the morning) so that they’ll get the energy and vitamins they need from the sun like most animals do (that includes us humans) and 2) is away from any artificial light in the evening so that they can get their much deserved rest after bouncing inside their cage all day long. I myself find this difficult to accomplish so the alternative is do 1) and just procure a tarpaulin with which you can cover their cage at night. The tarpaulin can act as shield to cold wind drafts as well.
Sunlight is definitely good for your birds but if they’re somewhere where they don’t get sunlight, giving them vitamins with vitamin D should be ok. I’ve had pairs that didn’t get sunlight at all but they were still prolific and healthy.
There’s also this guide that states that giving your birds 16 hours of “light” will make them breed better. I followed this rule before but i had more success breeding them by not following this.
If you have a sick bird, you have to separate it from the others until it gets well.
Thanks for the answers… I’ll try the tarpaulin thingie… I’ll just get them inside if there is a storm or something like Milenyo.. @__@;; I couldn’t find some vitamin D in the pet shop nearby and I dont know how to commute to Cartimar to find one hahahahah. XDDD
anyweiz.. I have another question.. haha. Really sorry for so many question.. I wanted to experience seeing eggs inside the nest so I’m trying my best. T___T you see, I have a talent in making a pet pass away. wawawawawa T___T
Question:
1. About the mate thingie.. as I said before, my “widower” chose the white one… but for some reason I think the white one dont like him… my widower sleeps outside their nest. He sleeps on a perch… compared to my other pair who sleeps together inside their nest… T__T I feel pity for him, the white one is not as affectionate as the 1st mate he had.. O__o;; So is it a bad thing or I should let it be? Should I do something or just let them whatever they want?? I want them to have babies T____T XDDD
2. Should I place a divider between the two pairs?? Seonadancing said that when a male wants to mate he doesn’t like distraction from the other male…So I’m guessing I should just place a divider between them… should I?? numerous time my widower would chase the other pair,(he doesn’t chase the white one that’s how I saw he chose her to be his mate. XD) but only for a moment unlike before…
—–
So yeah. that’s it for now. Sorry for tons of nutshell questions… T___T I just hate to see another dead finch in my cage. T___T
Hi! Regarding sunlight, All my birds all keep indoors as a substitutre for sunlight, you may use ultraviolet light (for fish). But I think it would be much better for them to be exposed to a little sunlight. It is important to note that for zebras and gouldians, the amount of sunlight that they are exposed to shall be limited to 8 hours a day only. For canaries, it is about 12 hours. This is a requiremnt for them to breed well.
Regarding your birds chasing each other, I have similar experiences also, What I can suggest is that the female should also be matured enough( 6 to 8 months) ready to breed before you pair her up with the male. Actually, there are some super aggressive finches that I know. and I dont keep them anyway in my aviary.
Im baacckk…. O_o;; XDDD
1. is it really possible that the finch I had got its first egg within 18 days?? O__o maybe its already pregnant when I got it neh?? it layed 2 eggs… @__@
2. I found out in the morning the other egg fell from the nest.its already broken T___T I have read in some sites that some finch really push their egg off the nest…is there some ways to avoid it?? thanks in advance!!!
bumping…
they broke their second egg…
@___@
what am I supposed to do with them… why are they doing that? abortion…? -____-;;;
hi eniehs,
i think breeding your zebra will be a great challenge to you. it seems that you are having a hard time breeding it. Here’s some tip, maybe you want to try this one. Try to feed them with eggs and vegetables (of course you have to change it everyday). Give them also calciums aside from vitamins. How many pairs of zebras you have right now? If you have 2 pairs try to exchange their partners. But be sure to it that they have atleast the same age. Friendly advise, as much as possible please buy your birds sa mga breeders, and they will also help you breeding your birds.
eniehs, as per warlock info benjie is the best zebra breeder. u can contact him in this no. (0920)9072305.
Zebras throw their eggs because of some of these reasons.
1. You keep on bothering them, or something is bothering them like a rat or roach.
2. First clutch.
3. 3rd straight clutch.
4. Lack of nesting material.
I used to count the number of eggs that were thrown away by my zebras but i stopped counting when the number went beyond 100.
wag ka maniwala ke warlock ,nagbibiro lang yun……he he
pero kung me maitutulong ako ,mag text ka lang.i’ll try my best.
seona,
musta na yug cfw?
just text me kung pwede na bro.
eniehs, i told you, expert breeders like sir benjie will always extend their helping hands.
sir benjie, warlock never lies….he he he
@eniehs, you got a great advice from seona and wildbirds. speaking from experience, your zebras haven’t settled yet(probably due to several reasons), and this is causing them to throw away, and even eat, their own eggs. find out what’s bothering them and soon they’ll start raising a family.
@ms. ladybird, you haven’t replied on my e-mail yet. iintayin ko po.
great week everyone!
@wildbirds
you mean as in ordinary chicken egg? yun ba
>________________
—
I feed them mineral grits ska yung cuttlebone for calcium din ata un? haha. I’m trying to follow kurt_ang’s diet for his finch dun sa isang topic dito, kaso so far d ko pa nabibili yung vitamins so ung birdamin ekek pa lang yung binibigay ko.. >_____________
and I went to cartimar last week paikot ikot ako bat danun, wlang japanese millet cla lahat..
—
I have 4 of them, same cage? ok lang ba yun? They switched mates on their own… last week ko lang napansin…
@seona
the only time I bother them is when I change their water,ska give them fresh water for bathing every morning, ska when I clean up their poopoos… >_____
napuputol po yung post ko, sorry for 3ple posting…
…….
I clean them every 2days-3days… bad ba un…?
@ladybird
Thanks for the number, I’ll contact him, kaso makulet ako bka mainis? XD
@sir benji
ok lang po? bka makulitan kau saken.
@Gsas
The other female decided to change mate as I saw it last week, it wants the other male so she keeps chasing the other female… that’s one of the reasons I could think of that bothered them…
@all
thanks for infos, so far all of your answers was really a big help for a newbie like me… thanks a bunch talaga
eniehs, with your permission can i have your email add or ym add or your cell #.
gsas, di mo pa rin pala nalilimutan yun he he he. i’m on field for almost a month and now lang uli ako nag open ng email ko. cge i’ll email you as soon as i finish my reports.
@eniehs
ibig siguro sabihin nun,whote chicken egg(grated) including the shell(ground).yung iba ima micro wave pa yung shell para sure na walang salmonella.
Eniehs, you just answered your own question. You shouldn’t give baths to your zebras if they have eggs. For one thing, they will leave their eggs because they love taking baths and when they return to sit on the eggs, the water from their feathers will sip into their eggs, thus making it clear. Napansin ko din na zebras know when their eggs are clear, tinatapon talaga nila. Separate the pairs too. Japanese Millet madami sa Progressive Poultry sa Edsa Project 7. Don’t clean the cage too much, napansin ko din na zebras like other animals are teritorial and their poop and pee leaves a scent that is distinct to them. Kaya nga when you replace their nest after a clutch it will take some time for them to get accustomed to the new nest again.
Benjie, sabihan kita, lumabas na yun inakay sa nest but masyado pang maliit. in another 2 weeks siguro. Thanks.
@seona
mukhang down nga ang ppf ah.. what happened kaya?
@eniehs, here’s what i do. after boiling the egg, i separate the shell, put it in a plastic bag or something, and pound it to bits by a hammer(hehe, nde naman masydong galit.) then i take the egg and grate it against a regular cheese grater. after which, hinahalo ko sila and i put it in a small tupperware so that i can store it sa ref. para di mapanis. pwede mo rin itong haluan ng vitamins, grated carrots and other veggies. yung 1 egg, enough na sya for two pairs of zebras for a week. sobra pa. credits to Mr. Emer for this technique, who by the way will be our next FinchMe featured breeder (gouldians expert), hopefully next week.
@ladybird of cavite, sige po. i’ll wait for your reply.
@everyone, gandang umaga!
@ladybird

thanks again to everyone who responded. Ü
benjie, i guess yun babasain yun eggs 2 days before hatch may sense din, medyo mahirap lang mag track ng timeframe and kung cacandle mo naman yun itlog baka ma istorbo naman yun magulang.
Up naman both PP and PPF ah.
hi there.
I would just like to thank this site for all the infos you shared with me,finally I got what I wished for.. XD

they came out of their nest yesterday morning. XD
questions again: XDDD
1. Do I have to separate their cage from their parents? and if I have to, when can I do that?
2. Do they need some other kind of diet or pretty much the same like the diet of their parents: the diet Ive been using is the one posted by kurt_ang in finch health and diet section.
thanks in advance~!
Hi Enieh!
1. Do I have to separate their cage from their parents? and if I have to, when can I do that?
Answer: Yes! When You notice that the babies will eat on their own, then you must separate the babies already. Usually the parents will start laying eggs already.
2. Do they need some other kind of diet or pretty much the same like the diet of their parents: the diet Ive been using is the one posted by kurt_ang in finch health and diet section.
Answer: Same, the moment theylearn to eat on their own.
P.S>. What’s the mutation of the finch in the pic? It looks great?..
Congrats eniehs, sana maparami mo sila.

HELP!
I’m a new finch owner, gifted with a pair of molting gouldians. The male’s older and just finished his molt, while the female looks like it’s going to still be molting until a month or so.
The female is pooping light-yellowish stuff, not the same kind the male poops out. His is more “normal” with bits and pieces. Hers is very liquid. This morning I was alarmed when I replaced their food and water and just in time saw her poop–it was completely liquid!
What’s wrong and what should I be doing?
By the way, what are other indications of mites? I’m not particularly sure, but I have a suspicion that our birds have them. They seem to be “nanggi-gigil” when they scratch their bodies and their heads. And from a couple of days’ observation, the “preening” and the scratching has surely became more frequent.
I fell in love with these birds at first sight, and would love to keep them safe and healthy. Hope you guys can give me proper advice as to what to do, what to buy and where to go.
Thank you very much in advance!
I’m a little out of practice with sick birds as luckily I haven’t had too many problems yet. My only experience with mites are air-sack mites. They make the bird wheeze and sniffle but your problem sounds like lice. I’d go to a good veterinary practice (I use the clinic at UP Los Banos) to get advice. A malathion powder would be OK but it has to be formulated for birds as too much will kill it. As for the diarrhoea there are many causes and usually by the time something is cultured the bird has died so getting treatment on a best guess from the vet will be your best bet. Make sure that she stays warm and has access to food and water. A broad spectrum antibiotic will work for some protozoal and bacterial infections but you do need to go to the vet. Sometimes even worms will cause diarrhoea and these are easy to see if you have access to a microscope. Good luck
Greg
hello glomor, welcome to the finches family…. im sure you will enjoy breeding gouldians…
i agree with you, talagang nakaka in-love ang mga gouldians, challenging ang pagbebreed ng mag ito. at walang kasing ligaya pag naibreed mo na sila.
talagang dumarating ang mga ganyan problem sa gouldian. patience ang kelangan mo. hope i can help you.
bata pa ba yung gouldian mo? if yes, talagang mag momoult sila. kadalasan march to april nagsisimula na sila maglugon til may. ang ginagawa ko pag alanganin na month at naglulugon pinapainum ko ng nekton e.
try mong painumin sila ng antibiotic (vetracin gold ang ginagamit ko) mix it using distilled or purified water for 3 consecutive days, tignan mo kung mag iimprove sila.
i suggest sa mga breeders ka bumili ng mga gouldians para malaman mo ang line or origin nung ibon plus they will give you good quality ng ibon. expert breeders will help you in breeding your finches.
happy gouldian breeding….
Thanks Greg and Ladybird for all your advice. I will try to consult a vet as soon as possible regarding our gouldians.
Our pair eats and sleeps well naman. The only problems are the female’s watery stool and their scratching. (I was even tempted to call one of them “Itchy” instead. Hehehe.) They don’t look lethargic at all, so I hope they’ll do fine and won’t surprise me with anything bad.
Will post their development.
Thanks again!

Hi! Recently I had the courage to venture into Finches. I bought three pairs, and it turned out, I only have two cocks and four hens! Anyway, my flock consists of the usual fawn and gray types with a lone Isabel. The five birds sharing similar coloration (fawns and grays) would usually gang up on the lonely Isabel hen so I had to transfer it to another cage. A week later, I saw the lone bird with a broken egg at the bottom of it’s cage. I did not provide it with a nest because I had no plans of breeding my birds just yet. I knew the egg would have been viable. It had a yolk and all the usual stuff you find inside an egg.
Do Zebras do this? I mean, lay eggs if they really can’t help it even without a wicker nest, alone in a small cage? I felt sorry for the Isabel so I paired it up with one of the fawn cocks in the other cage. I gave them a nest and right now, I don’t think they are through building their nest. They have slept on it for two nights straight, still no egg in sight. I am fascinated with finches right now, and I have lost sleep wondering if I’m doing something wrong. Any advice? THANKS!
P.S. O.C. ako. I Clean my cages every three days or so kasi I feed all my birds veggies every day. Now that my finches are starting to breed, do I have stop cleaning my cages? Thanks.
Dear addict. I don’t think you’re doing the wrong thing separating the birds if they are fighting often temperament comes down to the individual birds and breeding will bring out the best and worst in your birds. Normally hens get on well but when there is a shortage of resources like partners perhaps the similar are unconsciously involved in some Darwinian urge to secure their reproductive future.
As for birds laying on the cage floor it happens. I had it with a Star finch do this a few weeks ago. In that case I think that she was going to nest in her former home and since it takes days to mature an egg she was irrevocably committed to laying before I removed her from the aviary and placed her in the cage. If you go to Cartimar and look in some of the crowded zebra cages you’ll see that laying under those conditions is not uncommon if the birds are mature but this doesn’t mean that they were going to nest or even that the eggs are fertile. Birds that habitually lay without a mate or even a nest are best not bred from as continual laying weakens the bird and their parenting skills are missing so it’s best not to perpetuate the character and make more work for yourself.
I think cage cleaning every 3 days sounds excessive but if by cleaning all you’re doing is changing the tray to remove husks and droppings then this shouldn’t be a problem but not taking the birds out and scrubbing the cage out. If you’re worried about disease a spray everything, even the birds, with the poultry disinfectant Virkon S (5g sachet ~ P25 makes 1L and is good for at least a week). If the birds are nesting it is best not to disturb them or wet them however it’s hard to stop zebras breeding once they get going..
Sorry I can’t comment on your Tagalog passages as I only speak English – it’s all we were ever taught in Australia and I’ve got not capacity to learn it. Good luck with your breeding ventures
Greg
Hi. Thanks! The bird has two eggs now and I think it’s doing ok. Though breeding came in early for me this year, I don’t intend to breed any more of my birds any time soon. Lest one of my hens pull off another stunt like what my Isabel did. Thanks!

I am a newbie to this forum site.Can you help me find SCATT here in Manila.My gouldians are showing symptoms of air sac mite.Plz help me..
I’m Pretty sure that I’ve seen Scatt at two places in Cartimar - Gloldwing and MM & LB petshops.
If the Scatt doesn’t work out I’ve gotten ivamectin made up in mineral oil from UPLB. In my experience with Gouldians it should be discarded after 3 months or it will go off - causing feather loss, sterility and even death.

If the Scatt doesn’t work out an alternative is ivamectin made up in mineral oil. I’ve gotten it from the small animal veterinary clinic at UPLB. In my experience with Gouldians Ivamectin should be discarded after 3 months or it will go off - causing feather loss, sterility and even death.
Finally I find SCATT in Cartimar,but the problem is it’s too expensive (Php 1,200.00).According to Mang Orly of Anonas ,Santos Sy also sell it for only (Php450.00).Santos Sy live in Divisoria but I dont know the exact address.Anyone know where can I find him?Help again…..
Thar does sound pricy. The Ivamectin only cost P100 but if you get it make sure that you discard the unused portion after 3 months or is will poison any finches treated with it.
I found the best thing to my boyfriend’s birthday… It’s really hard to find cool and still unique.
So today I saw this thing from ZTARLET on facebook where you can name a real star in the sky and have the certificate and a teddy bear sent to you and pay it by a single SMS. So awesome
