Here’s my tried-and-proven finch recipes that will keep your birds healthy and away from bird diseases.
Basic Food:
Calgrain (White Millet) 40%
Canary seed 30%
Japanese millet 30%
Mineral Grits (for calcium)
Optional:
Niger Seed
Along with the basic seeds, I also include oats, vionate and cecical (which are available in some poultry stores), and Orlux egg food. Sometimes, I put in cod liver oil with the mix. Egg Food is a must particularly if your finches are feeding their babies. I mix egg food with hard-boiled eggs to give the young more protein needed for rapid growth.
I give my finches a good rotation of vitamins in a week, usually mixed with their water.
MWF: Ovitonic, Calci-Aid, and Vitamin C
Tuesdays : apple-cider vinegar and honey
Thursdays : Garlic and Oregano extract
Saturday/Sunday : Kelp (Iodine- good for australian finches)
There goes my secret. Just remember that a good diet is a must if you want your finches to grow stronger, healthier, and longer.

Hi! I’m new in taking care of finches so excuse me for asking stupid questions…
I’m trying to copy this diet for my finches.. so yeah. XDDD
I couldnt find japanese millet… Is Chinese mille t okay for an alternative?? XDDD I’m kind of really new so yah.. XDDD
and about the vitamins..
A vendor in Cartimar gave me what you call “Birdamin” I dont know if you have heard of it but Im guessing you have as I read you’re doing your shopping at Cartimar.. XDDDD Is it okay to give it to them as an alternative for vitamins?? since I couldnt find a lot of what you mentioned vitamins nearby… T.T
Hi!
Hi! It is much desirable if you have red/yellow panicum for your finches. Since nowadays, they are not available in most petstores, I substitute Japanese millet for them. Japanese millet can be found in Cartimar.
I have heard of Birdamin but I havent used them. Most of the vitamins that I use are for poultry use (e.g, figting cocks) beacuse it is important to keep these birds in good condition always.
Hi Kurt! What is the oregano extract for? I know kelp is very beneficial, but where do you get it? And how is it supplied?
Hello! May I know what is the oregano extract for? And where do you get kelp? How is it supplied?
I think you can get oregano extract in groceries. I don’t use it though. Isn’t kelp a form of seaweed? Maybe you can buy that in fish markets, or if it’s dried then sa grocery din.
My seed mix includes.
White Millet
Red Millet
Black Millet
Japanese Millet
Canary seed
Panicum (whenever available)
Niger seed
And a bag of this commercially available seed mix that cost 250 in Bioresearch. It contrains greens also so it’s pretty good. Spray Millet is given in addition to the seed mix.
Zebras doesn’t like black seeds very much so that’s what’s left on their seed cup most of the time.
Hi Seonadancing. I would like to know what is the benefit of the oregano extract for the finches. Also the dosage? Instead of the extract, I think it is better to use the fresh leaves. The extract may contain preservatives or other chemicals that may be harmful for the birds. What do you think? I hope Kurt can enlighten us with this one.
Here is the benefit of using oregano extract.
Oregano is made from wildcrafted true oregano (Origanum vulgare), an aromatic herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. Traditionally, oregano was used to support digestive, respiratory and joint health. Recent in vitro research indicates that carvacrol, an active constituent of oil of oregano, may provide support to the immune system.
haha kurt. san mo nakuha yan? parang kinopy-paste ah.. astig!
hehe, peace kurt!
I’ve never given oregano extract to my birds. I’ve only given kangkong, which they like very much. Although the 8 in 1 Nestling seed mix seems to have cinamon powder or some kind of powder added into it.
